Fungicides | Diseases
| Fungicides are
specifically developed to kill the fungus that infects the
grass plant itself and in most cases can eventually kill
the host. Some fungicides target a specific fungus and
knowing which one you have as the invader is important.
Any chemical usage should be carefully and responsibly
used. |

There are three main types of
fungicides and each has its advantages. The Granular
type is spread over the lawn and take a little longer to work and
some infestations require a longer acting product. Some are
powders, which can be mixed with water and applied through a
sprayer. Liquids are also used in the water sprayer method.

All three usually work for up to two weeks
depending upon the amount of water that the lawn receives. All
fungicides are either contact or systemic. Contact simply means
that it has to come in contact (touching) the blades of grass
thoroughly and works fairly fast.
Systemic means that
the fungicide enters the up through the root system and poisons
the fungus from the interior. Since some infestations are seasonal
occurrences it is best to apply theses a couple of weeks ahead of
the yearly visitations, thereby halting the problem before it
starts. Once again you have to be familiar with your lawn grass
and the problems it can incur.
Rates and the times to apply
a product are important and reading the label is a first not last
thing to do.
The common sense approach
in choice of method can be explained like this; if it is raining a
lot then don’t use the sprayer method because it will all wash
off. If it is really dry and you can’t water the lawn and rain
isn’t on the way then granules probably won’t dissolve and get
into the root system.
